On the morning of Monday, February 26, 2024, I can confirm that an auto-accident occurred involving Hawkins County students and a Hawkins County bus driver. I am glad to report that only two students were involved. They were both transported from the scene to receive medical attention and appear to have suffered only minor injuries.
But I am heartbroken to report Aleita Gladson has passed away. Aleita was a longtime and valued Hawkins County Schools team member, as a bus driver, as a secretary, and as assistant director within our Transportation Department. Our prayers go out to her family, and we would ask that all those within our Hawkins County community keep Aleita’s family in your prayers as well.
We pray too for the other driver involved in this accident.
I will take a moment here as well to provide our heartfelt thanks to the many first responders who rushed to the accident scene to care for all those involved. At this time though, out of respect for all of the people and families affected by this tragic accident, neither I nor Hawkins County Schools will have any further comment.

We will be celebrating our 100th day of school on February 7th. (This day was previously an inservice day but is now a regular day of school)
Please look for communication from your student’s teacher on any instructions for that day.

Parents, thank you for your patience as we have returned to school. I know this has been frustrating to some, especially when transportation has not been available for all students. As a reminder, if your child cannot access transportation, please call the school and exercise your parent “bus note.” We provide up to six of these per year and in addition to these, we will work with you if your child’s absence is due to transportation. If you have questions, please call your school. Again, thanks for your patience. Matt Hixson

Hawkins County Schools will be on a regular schedule tomorrow. Please access the updated bus route link at: HCK12.net/buses. Again, if your access roads are not safe for travel, please be in communication with your student’s school site.

Parents, we understand that those of you who reside on streets and roadways that have yet to be cleared of snow and ice may not be able to get your children to school today or even over the next few days. However, we have an obligation to open schools when a majority of our students can safely get to and from our schools. We are at this point. Please work with your school to keep them informed of your situation. I have advised all schools to work with parents and students in these situations.
This goes without saying, but if it is unsafe for a bus to travel down your road, please do not send your students of driving age down the same roads. If unsafe to go to school, please do not attempt the trip. Once the roads are safe, we will resume as many bus routes as possible, as quickly as possible.

For the updated bus schedule go to: www.hck12.net\buses

Hawkins County Schools will be on a two hour delay tomorrow, Wednesday, January 24. Please note that while we are able to open schools tomorrow, we cannot operate all bus routes. Please look for additional route information or go to our website at www.HCK12.net/buses for route information.

Hawkins County will be closed tomorrow, Tuesday, January 23. With tonight’s temperatures once again in freezing ranges, current rural route conditions, and the threat of additional ice on our county’s roads. Please watch for updates and announcements regarding the school system’s operational status for Wednesday.

All School custodial staff: we will need you to report to work for the day shift on Monday to help prep school sites for staff and students.

Hawkins County Schools will be closed Monday, January 22. While primary roads have been cleared, many secondary and rural routes throughout the County remain snow and ice covered.
We are hopeful to resume school and most bus routes by Tuesday, January 23. Please watch for updated announcements Monday.
